Easy Grilled Lettuce Recipe
Grilling is a super easy way to fancy up romaine lettuce for a salad, to top burgers, or to serve by itself as a side for you next BBQ or party. I love recipes where it fancies up a cheap ingredient with very little work! Lazy Budget Chef, ya know and my guests are none the wiser.
Um, unless they read this recipe.
No big. That means more Bar-B-Ques using grilled lettuce as an ingredient!
Looks so fancy and gourmet for about 15-20 minutes of work!
(And mot of that is waiting by the grill.)
You will need the following ingredients:
Romaine lettuce
Olive oil – I make my own olive oil spray by pouring it into an olive oil spray bottle like this one
Seasoning – depending upon how you plan to serve your grilled lettuce, you can go nuts with your favorite seasoning salt, use flavored BBQ smoke chips like these, or keep it simple like I did with a sprinkle of salt, pepper, and a squirt of lemon juice because I want to use my grilled lettuce to make a side salad
Step by Step How to Make this Recipe:
1. Start/heat up your grill. It was raining when I took the photos for this recipe so I used this exact electric indoor grill instead of fighting to keep the outdoor grill lit in a rainstorm.
2. Cut the romaine lettuce in half lengthwise. Do not remove the stem end of the lettuce. This is what will keep the leaves from flopping about and in place while you cook the lettuce.
3. Coat the lettuce with a thin layer of olive oil. If you don’t have an olive oil spray bottle, you can use a pastry brush like this one.
4. Season the olive oil coated side of the cut lettuce as desired.
5. Put the romaine lettuce seasoned side down on the grill. As the lettuce cooks it will start to glisten. I usually wait until there are a nice set of grill marks before I turn the lettuce and grill the other side – this will not take very long.
Grilling!
6. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to season the raw side of the romaine lettuce heart.
7. Flip the lettuce heart over and cook the raw side the same way you did in Step 5 and remove the romaine lettuce from the grill when it is done to your liking.
What do you do with grilled romaine lettuce?
