What Goes on Sale and What to Buy on Clearance in April

After really reading the grocery store sales fliers on line instead of just skimming them, I started to notice seasonal sales patterns, especially around holidays,  especially industry holidays like Earth Day.

When I shop seasonally,  I’m able to keep my family in fresh fruit and vegetables for less when nothing is growing locally yet. 




Shopping the April seasonal store sales doesn’t just apply to food. Many household items only go on sale in April too. It is a good time to start looking for that perfect Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or Graduation gift because the prices will be higher on those items in May and June.

If you are a thrift or consignment sale shopper, April is the time to hit the stores! Thrift store donations increase in April when people start their Spring cleaning.

Earth Day – organic fruits and vegetables

April Seasonal Fruit - grapefruit, strawberries

April Seasonal Produce - broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, avocado, cabbage, artichoke, asparagus, mushrooms, onions, peas, radish, rhubarb

April Seasonal Food Sales

Lent – meat free food, fish, cheese, etc.

Passover – brisket, matzo, etc.

Easter - candy, ham, eggs, vinegar, etc.

National Soft Pretzel Month

National Soy Foods Month

National Pecan Month

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day (April 2) – There are better sales in September for Back to School but if peanut butter and jelly is a staple item, it never hurts to have an extra on hand.

National Deep Dish Pizza Day (April 5)

National Beer Day (April 22) – Sales and specials may depend upon your state’s liquor laws.

Earth Day (April 22) – organic fruit, vegetables, and food

The Best Things to Buy in April

Shopping seasonally according to the April store sales doesn’t just apply to food. Many household items go on sale in April too. For example, the plant based products my family likes to use rarely go on sale, except for Earth Day so I buy an extra if I know we’ll need it soon.

Stress Awareness Month – health club memberships (although not as good as in January,) discounted classes, home massagers, etc. 

Children’s dress clothes – for Passover and Easter

Spa Week (April 16 – 22) – massages, waxing, facial treatments, manicure, pedicures, etc.

Earth Month/Day - plant based cleaners,  healthy and beauty products, recycled products    

National Garden Week – gardening gloves, tools, flower pots, etc. There may not be many deals on plants depending upon where you live and your frost date. Wait until May for deals on plants.

Spring Cleaning – cleaning products, cleaning tools, storage items

Vacuum Cleaners – It is the end of the model year and manufactures are clearing out old stock so it may or may not be a good deal. If you can wait, the best sales on vacuum cleaners are in November.

Kitchen tools, cookware, and accessories

Patio furniture and accessories

Bedding, sheets, and towels – this is a great time to buy flannel sheets for next winter.

Thrift store, eBay, and consignment stores – Donations are up because people are decluttering and Spring Cleaning.

Televisions, laptops, tablets, small electronics, and their accessories – Japanese manufacturers are putting old models on sale because it is the end of their fiscal year.

Gym shoes, tennis shoes, running shoes, sneakers – As the weather gets warmer more people will be hitting the running trail and exercising outside.

Rain coats, boots, umbrellas, light weight coats, etc. – April showers and all that.

Bathing suits, swimwear, and beachwear

Prom dresses and tux rentals

Jewelry – Jewelry stores are hoping your spend your tax return money with them. This is a good time to look at engagement or wedding bands, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or Graduation gifts. 

Cruises and summer air travel – April is a shoulder season. You will find deals on April cruises, and European travel. You will also find deals if you book your summer vacation flight, hotel, etc in April.

Home improvement supplies 

Houses – Spring prices are good but winter is the best time to buy for the lowest price since both buyers and the sellers want to take advantage of getting one of the last tax breaks of the calendar year.

It also needs to be said that just because these items may be on super mega sale  and you can buy it cheap, it doesn't mean you should. If you can’t or won’t use it you’ll save more money by not buying it at all.
