In just a few short days, The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part One will hit the movie theaters! Food is practically a main character in
The Hunger Games books that I decided to make a recipe from the book for
RaeGun Ramblings Hunger Games blog party.
I bought the book
The Unofficial Recipes of the Hunger Games 187 Recipes Inspired by The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay from Amazon (you can buy it here) a couple of years ago because I wanted to try making the bread recipes from each of the 12 Districts.
Instead I made these yummy breakfast muffins.
This recipe is inspired by Haymitch nursing a hangover by eating a muffin one morning during The Victor Tour of the districts. I like several things about this recipe. It uses whole wheat flour instead of white. The ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg in the muffins smell heavenly while the muffins are baking in the oven. They make great breakfast muffins too. We will probably have them for breakfast on Thanksgiving if the batch I made for this post lasts that long!
Since I did not create nor do I own the Haymitch’s Hangover Muffin recipe, I can’t list it here – plagiarism, you know. I don’t want President Snow and his Peacekeepers after me for breaking the law.
While I can’t give you the recipe, I can show you some food eye candy photos of the process!
First I combined all of the dry ingredients – the whole wheat flour, spices, and brown and white sugars.
The molasses in the brown sugar is a devious friend to the cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger in the baked muffins.
Next I tweaked and combined the wet ingredients. I substituted almond milk and non dairy “butter” for the real thing since I can’t eat either (sad face.) If you have a vegan egg substitute you can use that to make this a vegan muffin recipe. I used real eggs since I’m not allergic to them.
The almond milk gives the muffins an extra hint of nutty flavor.
I mixed the wet and dry ingredients together. It is times like these when I wish the Internet had Smell O Vision because it smells so good!
Batter up!
Finally I added the nuts and dried fruit. In the spirit of The Hunger Games I used what I had in my cupboard that was close to the original recipe like I am sure Katniss and Prim’s mother had to do often in District 12. I used dried apple (
learn how I make dried apple chips here) for fresh. I went with almonds instead of hazelnuts since I already had almond milk in the batter. Also, we don’t have any hazelnuts.
Looking good!
This recipe makes two dozen District 12 size muffins.
